What is the Law of Attraction and why does it generate so much discussion and controversy? As a start, watch the movie “The Secret” because a) it is great to watch and learn from and b) you will get introduced to the Law of Attraction in a way that only seeing a movie can. The Law of Attraction has apparently been used by great minds throughout history although it is not clear if these people actually knew consciously they were using the Law or not. According to “The Secret’, there’s some evidence that this law was used by the likes of Beethoven and Einstein…
The Law of Attraction works whether you are knowledgeable about it or not. However, it is suggested that the law works better if you are aware of it and direct your energies in consonance with it.
The Law of Attraction states that whatever you want from the universe, the universe gives that to you. In other words, you attract what you want the most in life. What you focus on, what you dream about, what you are passionate about, your single-minded desire to have something or achieve something, is what you end up attracting into your life.
This is not something as simple as just wishing all day you get something and presto, you get it! That is not the Law of Attraction, that is wishful thinking. Someone who is short of money and keeps thinking “I need more money” is unlikely to get this because the reality they create for themselves is a perpetual need for more money.
By focusing relentlessly on achieving something, by really believing it is possible, by taking appropriate action every day in this pursuit, we increase the odds in our favor. An entrepreneur who will just not give up, someone who manages failure after failure to keep going despite detractors, someone who is determined to run the marathon despite a crippling injury, all of these are examples of people who are likely to get what they want and desire.
Conversely, when we doubt our abilities, when we engage in negative self talk, when we believe that we won’t get what we want because it is too hard or too unrealistic, the universe (the reality we create for ourselves) takes notice and arranges for us the negative outcomes that we have been thinking about. This is why positive self talk is so important to reverse the direction of potential outcomes.
Every moment, every hour, we are bombarded with thoughts, images, sounds, ideas. This requires gigabytes of bandwidth and the brain can’t process all of this. So nature has created a “bandwidth filter” in our brain called the Reticular Activation System (RAS) and how this works is that your subconscious mind takes note of what is important to you, what is high priority for you and feeds that information to you first and filters out the noise. This is why when you have been thinking for a long time about buying that particular model of car, you start to notice that car model in traffic much more often. This is why the Law of Attraction works. You make something a top priority not just in words but also in action and you start seeing the opportunities to get that something you wanted.
