Executive Presence – Do You Have It?

Executive PresenceExecutive presence is an intangible quality. People who have this seem in control, relaxed, self-assured. They seem to have a charisma about them – the kind that attracts attention when they enter a room or start to speak. Executive presence is easy to notice but not easy to describe or define. It is a mixture of skills that helps to send the right signals to others. Research has shown that executive presence can be developed and that there is a strong correlation between executive presence and status. Here are some factors and skills that contribute to this presence…

Personal Appearance and Dress

Those with executive presence look good. Their clothing is smart, neat and professional but never flashy. Their attention to their personal appearance does not seem overdone but obviously exudes confidence and energy.

Communication Skills

They are effective communicators and write well. They are good listeners who understand that listening to others is not just about faking interest but about the value to be gained by opening up oneself to the views of others.

Emotional Poise

The person with executive presence remains calm while others around him or her are losing their cool and becoming negative. They can handle tough situations and know how to recover from setbacks faster than the average person.

Professional Knowledge and Expertise

They work with high-energy, do not tire easily and enjoy their work. They are usually subject matter experts who believe that continous learning is key to success. They love sharing their knowledge and helping others to develop.

Humility

Their self-assuredness never seems to be arrogance or brashness. There is a calm humility in such people and a genuine respect for colleagues.

No other factor contributes more to your personal brand than your degree of executive presence. Take one of the factors above where you feel you need improvement and work on that.
