If you are a manager, you will have to deal with all kinds of employees in your job, including handling difficult employees. It is an unfortunate reality that every organization has a number of these characters. It is also true that most managers don’t like handling a difficult employee; they will much rather ignore the issue or skirt around it because this is much easier to do. But remember, if you are a manager or a supervisor and you don’t know how to handle a difficult employee, then you become the difficult employee yourself
Many people think that communicating is easy. It is, after all, something we’ve done all our lives. There is some truth in this simplistic view. Communicating is straight forward. What makes it complex, difficult, and frustrating are the barriers we put in the way. When communication doesn’t happen, conflict often does.
MDi Pakistan hosted a FREE webinar for students, youth and aspiring entrepreneurs on Tuesday 29 December 2020, 2.30 – 4.30 pm.
This was a conversation about entrepreneurship with Salman Farooq, a high-energy, result-oriented and successful entrepreneur with both domestic and international experience in technology, education, energy and other industries. Salman has been involved with successful business ventures in the US, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
The webinar is in the form of a conversation with Salman Farooq who responded to questions from a panel of moderators that included Asad Zaidi, CEO of MDi Pakistan and Uzera Nishat, CEO of the Institute of Empowerment. We used both English and Urdu to ensure maximum participation. The webinar focused on what entrepreneurship is, what it isn’t, what works in the Pakistan context, and what types of businesses can be particularly feasible for those looking to start out with a small venture. There was also an opportunity for a Q&A for participants at the end of the session.

It was in the early 1950’s when the concept of “management by objectives” was introduced by Peter Drucker. The idea was that the boss would agree a set of goals for the year with each subordinate and then review the performance against these goals. Managers also learned about the acronym SMART for goal setting meaning goals had to be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound. This methodology of goal setting has become so established that few managers have actually questioned if this approach works.
MDi is one of the pioneers of e-learning in Pakistan offering e-learning courses on a variety of skills for over a decade. Similar to our face-to-face public and in-house training programs, the MDi e-learning programs have always brought great value for our learners.
The current circumstances related to COVID-19 are however not conducive for holding public and in-house training programs for some time. MDi has therefore decided to offer fully interactive online training at reduced fees over the next few months to ensure our clients can continue with their essential capacity building programs.
The idea of online learning can be overwhelming at first but once you get to experience it and learn and develop new skills, only then you realize it is one of the most important things we have to adapt to in this fast-paced and challenging world. Adjusting to an online learning model can be a challenge at first, but once you get used to the format, there are numerous benefits to be realized.
One of the most important ideas that you should be aware of that has the potential to change your life is the concept of Less is More and the 80:20 rule. The 80:20 rule is also referred to as the Pareto Principle after the name of the famous 19th century Italian economist and philosopher called Vilfredo Pareto. There are two wonderful books I highly recommend that are devoted to this subject called the 80:20 Principle by Richard Koch (see https://richardkoch.net/2012/11/the-8020-principle-2/ ) and The One Thing by Gary Keller and co-author Jay Papasan ( https://www.the1thing.com/ ) that go into detail about the power of this principle. This article provides an overview of the key elements of the principle.
