The right way means the way that gets you the most valuable information possible. Here are some questioning techniques to get that valuable information out into the open&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Ask Open\u00a0Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An open question is one that cannot be answered by a short, yes\/no type of response.\u00a0Using an open-ended question, you get insights and additional information you might not have even thought about.\u00a0Questions with \u201cwho,\u201d \u201cwhat,\u201d \u201cwhere,\u201d \u201cwhen,\u201d \u201chow,\u201d or \u201cwhy\u201d lead to people giving more detailed\u00a0answers..<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.\u00a0Ask Probing Questions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Always consider using follow-up or probing questions. \u00a0Ask a follow up question such as, \u201cWhat makes you suggest that?\u201d or \u201cWhy do you feel that way?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Assume you are talking to a colleague who tells you that another team member has been very uncommunicative. \u00a0A question such as \u201cWhat do you mean he is uncommunicative?\u201d will lead you to the real facts. It may not be because the person is necessarily being difficult; it might just be the person not being accessible in the last 2-3 days. Follow up questions like this give you additional and valuable insight.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Don&#8217;t Interrupt\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t interrupt the person with whom you are talking. First, it tells the person you don&#8217;t value what they are saying. Interrupting someone enforces your agenda and stops their train of thinking. It is possible you might miss\u00a0out on something the person would have told you had you not interrupted.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, remember\u00a0that asking the right questions is a skill that requires practice.\u00a0But it is worth the effort.
