International Case Study

USQ MBA students can opt to attend an intensive one-week International Business Course that counts as one of the units in the 12-unit MBA. The last course was held during August 1-5 2011 in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. The course is aimed at providing students enrolled in the USQ MBA an international business experience focusing on leading strategic change..

The main features of the course are:

The course takes a strategic management perspective within a global context. Students are required to work in teams and assigned a case for which they are required to provide practical solutions to a business problem. Students also have an opportunity to gain first hand business experience of one of the most vibrant emerging economies in Asia through lectures, local guest speakers and an industry visit.

Students from international locations will pay their normal fee, but are also responsible for their visa/travel and accommodation costs. This course will count towards the MBA on successful completion with the approval of the USQ Director of MBA.

The International Management Development course will be delivered by three highly experience international business academics who are familiar with the Asian business. The main teaching team includes: (a) Professor Michael Grund (specialist in Marketing) (b) Dr. Bruce Millett (specialist in Strategic Management, experience in Asia) (c) Professor Peter Murray (specialist in HR, International Management, Asia) This team will also benefit from the input of distinguished local professors and business and industry practitioners.

Case Study: The course revolves around a case study within the Asian context for which students work in teams to provide practical solutions and make recommendations. Students are divided into teams of 4-6 to work on the case study. Students then make an oral presentation of their main findings to the entire class. They are also required to submit a comprehensive final report where each team member has to contribute. The report should focus on the main issue at hand, how the team went about its investigation, and provide comprehensive recommendations to the company. The report should also contain any necessary financial information used in arriving at the recommendations. Each student is also required to submit a reflective summary of his/her assessment of the business environment in Malaysia and how this impacts on business.
